Cruise and Port Canaveral
Holiday Cruise Season: What Time to Leave Orlando for Your Port Canaveral Ship
On this page
Short answer
Every cruise line now gives you an arrival window. Leave so you reach the terminal as it opens: about 1 hour 30 minutes ahead from Orlando International Airport (MCO) and 1 hour 45 minutes from a Disney resort on a busy holiday weekend. Arriving earlier means waiting outside. Fly in the day before if you can. Private rides from MCO are $159 to $249 per vehicle.
Cruise-line rules and the Port's 2026 schedule last checked October 27, 2026. Your boarding documents have the final word.
What time should you leave Orlando for your ship?
Start from your arrival window, not the sailing time. Take the top of the normal drive time from where you're staying, then add 30 minutes for holiday traffic and the line of cars at the terminal. With an 11:30 AM arrival window, that gives:
| Leaving from | Normal drive | Leave this long before your window | For an 11:30 AM window |
|---|---|---|---|
| Orlando International Airport (MCO) | 45 to 60 minutes | 1 hour 30 minutes | 10:00 AM |
| Downtown Orlando | about 52 minutes | 1 hour 25 minutes | 10:05 AM |
| Universal or International Drive | about 1 hour 3 minutes | 1 hour 35 minutes | 9:55 AM |
| Walt Disney World resorts | 55 to 75 minutes | 1 hour 45 minutes | 9:45 AM |
| Kissimmee | about 1 hour 7 minutes | 1 hour 40 minutes | 9:50 AM |
Drive times from the Port and our route pages. The 30-minute cushion is our suggestion for busy holiday weekends.
Driving and parking yourself? The Port's garages open at 10 AM on sailing days, and the Port asks you to drop people and bags at the terminal before you park. Our Port Canaveral terminal guide covers parking and drop-off at each terminal.
Arrival windows and cut-offs by cruise line
Each line staggers its guests across the day, so the terminal never has everyone at once. Arrive early and you wait outside; arrive after the cut-off and you can lose the cruise.
| Cruise line | Your arrival time | If you arrive early | The cut-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Disney Cruise Line | Port Arrival Time, picked at online check-in | Wait outside until your time | On board at least 1 hour before sailing |
| Carnival | Arrival Appointment, from 14 days out; assigned the morning of if you skip it | Longer waits | The Final Boarding time on your boarding pass; porters take bags until 2 hours before departure |
| Royal Caribbean | Arrival slot, picked in the Royal app | Cannot begin boarding | 90 minutes before port operations close |
| Norwegian | Arrival time, picked at online check-in | Asked not to come more than 1 hour early | On board at least 1 hour before departure |
| Princess | Arrival Group, required at Port Canaveral since May 2026 | Drop bags, come back at your time | Ships cannot wait, even for delayed flights |
| MSC Cruises | Check-in slot, assigned by default | May wait outside the terminal | Check-in and boarding close 2 hours before departure |
| Celebrity | Arrival window, picked at check-in | Delays at the terminal | Before the All Aboard time in your documents |
From each line's own arrival and embarkation pages. Your exact times are in your boarding documents or the line's app.

The busiest holiday sailing days at Port Canaveral
The holidays themselves are quiet at the port. The weekends around them are not. Counting the turnaround sailings in the Port's 2026 schedule:
| Date | Ships sailing | At the port |
|---|---|---|
| Thursday, November 26 (Thanksgiving) | 1 | Quiet |
| Friday, November 27 | 5 | Busy |
| Saturday, November 28 | 6 | Busiest |
| Sunday, November 29 | 6 | Busiest |
| Friday, December 18 | 6 | Busiest |
| Saturday, December 19 | 6 | Busiest |
| Thursday, December 24 (Christmas Eve) | 3 | Light |
| Friday, December 25 (Christmas) | 0 | No sailings |
| Saturday, December 26 | 5 | Busy |
| Sunday, December 27 | 6 | Busiest |
| Thursday, December 31 (New Year's Eve) | 4 | Moderate |
| Friday, January 1, 2027 | 0 | No sailings |
| Saturday, January 2 | 5 | Busy |
| Sunday, January 3 | 6 | Busiest |
Turnaround sailings only, from the Port's master cruise schedule, September 2026 to February 2027. Most ships sail between 3:30 and 5:00 PM.
On a six-ship day, six ships' guests, their cars and their luggage arrive between late morning and early afternoon. Keep the 30-minute cushion on those days, and have your boarding documents open before you reach the curb.
Fly in the day before your holiday cruise
Princess "strongly" recommends arriving at least one day before your cruise if you're flying, and Celebrity calls it wise. Over the holidays, MCO's own numbers make the case:
- Thanksgiving 2025: MCO expected nearly 1.9 million passengers, with more than 177,400 on its busiest day, the Sunday after.
- Christmas and New Year's 2025: nearly 3.1 million passengers, the busiest day Saturday, January 3 with about 196,212. MCO told travelers to arrive three hours before their flight.
A morning flight that lands late on one of those days leaves no margin for a 3:30 PM ship. Land the day before, sleep near the airport, Disney or International Drive, and leave in the morning with time to spare. Flying in the same day anyway? The Disney Cruise Line bus needs you on the ground by 11:30 AM and Carnival's by 12:00 PM, and our Port Canaveral airport guide has the rest.
Holiday traffic between Orlando and the port
AAA's 2025 forecasts put Florida at the top of Thanksgiving destinations and Orlando first for the year-end holidays. AAA's national traffic tables (from INRIX) show the same shape each season:
- Worst: the afternoons before a holiday, and late morning to evening on the weekends around Christmas and New Year's.
- Lightest: Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year's Day.
- Best time to drive: before 11 AM on most of those days.
A morning drive to the port runs ahead of the worst of it. The route is SR 528, the Beachline, a cashless toll road; our guide to how far Port Canaveral is from Orlando Airport covers tolls and the route.
Running late? What the cruise lines say
- Ships don't wait. Princess says ships "cannot delay departure for late-arriving guests, even in the case of flight delays."
- You may lose the cruise. Carnival's ticket contract gives no refund to a guest who fails to board, and Disney and MSC may refuse boarding after your time.
- Rejoining costs you. Royal Caribbean doesn't allow planned late boarding, and Norwegian makes guests pay their own way to rejoin.
If you're stuck, call your cruise line first. Travel insurance that covers missed departures is worth a look for a holiday sailing.
