Cruise and Port Canaveral

Port Canaveral Airport Guide: Orlando, Sanford or Melbourne?

On this page

Short answer

There is no commercial Port Canaveral airport. Melbourne (MLB) is closest, 25 to 28 miles south, but has few airlines. Most cruisers fly into Orlando International (MCO), 42 to 45 miles and 45 to 60 minutes away, where the cruise lines run buses. Sanford (SFB) is about 60 miles. JOB's private minivans, SUVs and 12- or 14-passenger vans from MCO start at $159 per vehicle.

Is there an airport at Port Canaveral?

No. Port Canaveral is the world's busiest cruise port, but no airline flies there. The Port's own directions start from Orlando International, which it calls "Florida's largest domestic airport," about 45 minutes west on SR 528.

If you searched "Cape Canaveral airport," the runway on the Cape is the Space Force Station Skid Strip (XMR), a private-use military field, and the Port Canaveral Heliport (FA90) is a private helipad. Neither carries airline passengers.

Port Canaveral airport options compared

Three airports with airline flights serve Port Canaveral cruisers: Orlando International, Orlando Sanford and Melbourne.

What airport is closest to Port Canaveral?

Melbourne Orlando International (MLB) is closest by miles: 25 miles south by Royal Caribbean Blog's count and 27.5 by Go Port's. Still, the drive takes 40 to 50 minutes, and Go Port notes traffic can make it slower than the Orlando run.

Orlando International (MCO) is the closest practical airport. It is 42 miles by MCO's count, almost all on one expressway, SR 528. Details and tolls: how far Port Canaveral is from Orlando airport.

Orlando International (MCO): the easiest airport for most cruisers

Fly into MCO unless a much cheaper fare elsewhere changes the math: it has the most flights, the most direct road and the cruise lines' own buses.

  • Flights: 37 major airlines and 57.7 million passengers in 2025, seventh in North America (ACI-NA).
  • Disney Cruise Line bus: $45 per guest, and your flight must land by 11:30 AM.
  • Carnival bus: $37.99 per person for flights landing by 12:00 PM, meeting at Terminal B, Level 1.
  • Shared shuttle: Go Port charges $29.99 per traveler each way and leaves MCO between 10:00 AM and 12:30 PM.
  • Private ride: a JOB driver meets you inside the terminal with a name sign (quoted with your ride). Landing at Terminal C? See our MCO Terminal C pickup guide.

Orlando Sanford (SFB): cheaper flights, longer ride

Sanford makes sense when Allegiant or another SFB airline saves your group real money. Expect about 60 miles, roughly 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes to the port, and no cruise-line buses.

  • Flights: SFB lists four airlines: Allegiant, Arajet, BermudAir (service begins October 2026) and Sun Country (seasonal or charter).
  • No cruise-line buses: "none of the cruise lines currently provide shuttles from Sanford Airport to Port Canaveral," according to Go Port.
  • Tight shuttle window: Go Port's $49.99 Sanford shuttle picks up only from 10:30 to 11:00 AM, and flights landing after 10:00 AM need other transport.
  • Pickup spot: SFB's zone for pre-arranged rides is directly across the street from Baggage Claim 1 to 3.

Melbourne (MLB): closest on the map, fewest flights

MLB is the nearest airline airport to the port, but it is small. Choose it when a nonstop from your home city lands there.

  • Size: 747,691 passengers in 2023, per MLB's website, against 57.7 million at MCO in 2025.
  • Airlines: nonstops on Allegiant, American, Delta and TUI (Visit Space Coast), plus seasonal Sun Country. Delta adds seasonal weekend New York-LaGuardia flights from December 19, 2026.
  • Ground options: rideshare pickup is outside baggage claim, per MLB, and Royal Caribbean Blog found Uber quotes of $62 (UberX) and $78 (UberXL) to the port.

Daytona Beach (DAB) is farther still, about 71 miles, with no shared shuttles to the port, per Royal Caribbean Blog.

Sanford vs Orlando airport for a Port Canaveral cruise: cost per group

If the airfares are close, MCO wins on time and ground cost. Sanford wins only when the flight savings beat the gap in ground cost below. Totals are one way, full fares, rounded to the dollar.

From MCO, one JOB vehicle costs less per person than Go Port at 6 riders and from 8 up and less than the Disney Cruise Line bus from 4 riders up. Happy Limousine's $19.99 shuttle from MCO stays cheaper until 12 riders, if you land in time. From Sanford, a JOB vehicle beats Go Port's $49.99 seat from 4 riders up. For a family of 4, a private minivan from MCO is $39.75 each: more than a Go Port seat, less than the Disney Cruise Line bus.

Disney Cruise Line charges guests 3 and older. An UberXL from MCO runs about $95 to $120 for up to 6 and can surge 1.5 to 2 times on debarkation mornings (RideWise). Seven or more? See our private group shuttle.

When should your flight land, and when can you fly home?

Fly in the day before if you can. Going home, book a late-morning or later flight, and a little later from Sanford.

Embarkation day

  • Royal Caribbean Blog recommends arriving the day before: a delayed morning flight can mean missing the ship.
  • Same-day arrivals: land at MCO by 11:30 AM for Disney Cruise Line's bus or 12:00 PM for Carnival's.

Debarkation day

  • Most ships dock between 6:00 and 7:00 AM (Port Canaveral schedule).
  • Disney Cruise Line lists 11:15 AM as its earliest MCO departure, Carnival's transfers need flights at 12:50 PM or later, and MSC suggests at least five hours between the ship's arrival and your flight.
  • The airport authority recommends reaching MCO security 2 hours before departure.
  • From Sanford, add about 20 minutes.

By cruise line: the earliest flight after a Port Canaveral cruise. Late flight home? Our Port Canaveral baggage hold keeps your suitcases while you visit Kennedy Space Center (which bans luggage), Cocoa Beach or Jetty Park, then drives you to MCO, from $249 for up to several hours.

Which cruise terminal, and which exit?

It depends on your ship: from SR 528, Exit 54A serves Terminals 5, 6, 8 and 10, and Exit 54B serves Terminals 1 and 3. Give your driver your ship's name, not just the cruise line. Assignments in the Port's September 2026 to February 2027 schedule:

  • CT1Royal Caribbean: Utopia, Harmony and Star of the SeasExit 54B
  • CT3Carnival Glory, Mardi Gras and Venezia; Caribbean Princess (September and October 2026)Exit 54B
